Just Cause 3 LTD Bargain Bin Review
In this episode we pull a game out of the bargain bin, we take a look back at Just Cause 3 by Avalanche Studios.
Set in a fictional Mediterranean island called Medici, under the control of dictator Sebastian Di Ravello, we follow larger than life Rico Rodriguez as he seeks to restore freedom to his people. If you are new to the channel, this is where we boil games down to their four main components, Graphics, Sound, Game-play and Replay Value to give you an overall score, before we start, make sure you hit that like button and subscribe to see all our reviews, let's get into it.
Graphics:
With the sprawling mountains and shimmering beaches, this open-world game is beautiful to look at, And from the moment you pick up your first gun and start blowing stuff up your sucked into this game, with realistic blast physics and rag-doling enemies.
Simply gliding around with a wing-suit is pure eye candy, you'll find yourself taking the long way to your destination so that you can enjoy the scenery.
But there is an elephant in the room, the frame rate in this game can drop so low at times as to be almost unplayable.
With such a heavy reliance on physics its no wonder this game struggles when hundreds of things are blowing up on the screen at once, there have been patches over the years to address this, but its still an issue.
Score: 8.5
Sound:
The sound in this game is surprisingly good, its such a satisfying thing to set up a bunch c4 explosives on fuel tank stand back and listen to the carnage.
The guns all sound good with a strong pop, but let's be honest you're here for the explosions, raining down rockets on an unsuspecting military base never sounded so good.
The voice acting in this game is as subtle as a sledgehammer, but that's part of this games charm, it's over the top and it doesn't apologize for it
Score: 8.5
Gameplay:
There's a pretty big world to explore here, go where you blow whatever you like up, yes the aim of the game is to liberate Medici, but its so much fun just stealing a helicopter, sitting just outside the reach of the enemy tanks and lighting up an entire facility.
The storyline is very basic, basically kill the bad guys and save the day, the campaign isn't overly long depending on your skill level which is a good thing because it can get a bit samey after a while
The game does require you to complete the campaign before you can fully liberate Medici and unlock all the toys at Rico's disposal, which is a little annoying.
Score: 8
Replay Value:
Medici is a series of islands and liberating all of them can take some serious time, like we said the campaign isn't overly long, but it did take me quite a while to clean up all of Di Ravello's army, which is where my main gripe with this game comes in, once you've liberated a town the bad guys simply disappear.
Once you've liberated all the towns, there's literally nothing to do, you can always shell out the cash and download the DLC, which we did, but the DLC's storyline isn't at the same level of the main game and I didn't find it as enjoyable
Score: 8.5
Summary:
I really enjoyed this game, I liked that I was in control, if I wanted to do the story I could or if I just felt like flying around reaping havoc all over the place I could do that too.
I would have loved it if the size and scale of the explosions continued to grow, when I first started playing I felt like the game was building towards epic nuclear style explosions but it capped out which was disappointing
Frame rate issues aside this is a solid game, a fun way to turn your brain off and enjoy some over the top explosions.
