Uncharted: Drakes Fortune Review

In this episode we go right back to the dawn of the ps3 with uncharted, drakes fortune, this is the game that took developer naughty dog from a creator of fun platform games to the masters of story-driven gaming.

Graphics:

When this game first launched it pushed the envelope of what's possible with graphics, and while some of the textures and models might seem average by modern standards, this game can still pack a punch.

Whether it's standing on top a boat and staring out at the glimmering sunset.

Or walking through thick luscious forests this game still looks a treat.

Its water physics was class-leading at the time with Drake clothes getting wet when he interacted with water.

Throw in the brilliantly acted cut scenes and this game can still suck you in to this day.

Score: 8.5

Sound:

To say the sound in this game has held up well over the years would be an understatement, like a star wars intro music or the Indiana Jones score Uncharted has its own unique calling card

Whenever I hear that sound I'm instantly taken back to 2007 and playing this game for the first time, Uncharted Drakes Fortune set a new standard for what to expect in video games scores.

This voice acting is also top-notch, not only in the cut scenes but throughout the game, it's the little comments and jokes that Naughty Dog put throughout the game that really gives life to these characters and helps you bond with them.

Score: 9.0

Gameplay:

Throughout the game, you'll be presented with a variety of different challenges, from climbing walls and swinging on ropes to solving somewhat straight forward puzzles, but the majority of the time you'll spend with this game will be ducking for cover and picking off enemies in gunfights

And this is one of the game's weaknesses, while the mechanics work okay and there's a good mix of weapons, the shooting can feel a little bit clunky at times, and depending on if you're playing on the ps3 or ps4 the grenade throwing can be a mess

There's a reasonable mix of enemies to take down, from your run of the mill bad guy, through to laser-sighted snipers

I've completed this game on crushing on both the PS3 and PS4 and I feel like the difficulty was toned down a little bit on the PS4, but don't be mistaken, if you choose to play on crushing, it can be a real grind.

Score: 8.0

Replay Value:

Clocking in at about 16 hours there really isn't much else to do once you've finished, you can always go back and find all the treasure, if you use a guide this won't take you too long but if you hunt them down yourself it can take a while.

There's no multiplayer in either version of the game which is not great.

The PS4 version of the game introduced speed runs and a brutal difficulty level which for the sadistic people out there would be a real treat, for me crushing difficulty was more than enough

Score: 7.5

Summary:

For me, this game was one of the great highlights of the PS3's generation, and while the game is not perfect and the end of the game seems to drag on a little bit the story is what really sticks out to me.

Nathan, Elana, and Sully all instantly became classic video game characters and as I mentioned before, the score in this game is iconic,  as soon as I hear it I know I'm in for a real treat.

With the PS4 breathing new life into the original game with the remastered Nathan Drake collection, the game was brought to a whole new audience, who got to enjoy for the first time the bombastic, Indiana Jones style adventure that I'd grown to love.

If you love great storytelling in games, great paced adventure, and excitement then you should not let this amazing game pass you buy, and if you have already played it, go play it again, you won't regret it.
